Positive Behaviour Support
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an evidence-based approach that aims to improve the quality of life and reduce challenging behaviours that concern people with disabilities.
It incorporates principles from applied behaviour analysis (ABA) and uses a person-centred planning approach to create a specially tailored intervention plan that addresses each person’s specific needs and preferences.
PBS promotes positive behaviours through functional behaviour analysis, devising proactive strategies, supporting replacement skills development, and environmental modifications.
A key emphasis of PBS is collaboration with the person, their family, and other support networks. This collaborative approach ensures consistency of the plan, and increases the rate of success and effectiveness of skill development. Involving all key stakeholders helps to make everyone involved feel included and valued in this intervention process.
Crisis Behaviour Support
As part of our Positive Behaviour Support Program, Crisis Behaviour Support is suited for families experiencing a high level of highly challenging behaviours of concern, and requires immediate crisis management and safety planning for the client and their families.
A crisis behaviour support plan will incorporate components of a positive behaviour plan, focusing on keeping all persons involved safe, to reduce the likelihood of further escalation of behaviours, through identification of triggers, reactive and proactive strategies.
An initial consultation will be held with the primary caregivers to
- identify the current behaviours of concerns
- complete a functional analysis of the behaviours
- observation of the client
- evaluation and assessment of client’s presentation
- review of client’s documents
A comprehensive behaviour support plan will then be developed for the client, which will include
- a functional analysis of behaviours – e.g. functions of behaviours, setting events, consequences of behaviours
- proactive strategies – replacement skill development
- reactive plan for crisis behaviour management
- implementation and continuous review of plan
The positive behaviour support plan will be supported and implemented directly by the client, their families, and external stakeholders such as schools and day activity centres.
